1969. Rural America. Jack and his siblings Jane, Billy and Sam live almost like squatters in the old Marrowbone House, a dilapidated farm that used to belong to their mother’s great-aunt Nettie and has been abandoned for many years. As the story opens, we learn Jack, Jane, Billy and Sam are keeping a secret from the world. They fled England with their mother Rose, running away from their abusive father to seek a new life in a new country. They quickly build a friendship with Allie, a local girl who brings light to their sad lives. But Rose is very ill and dies soon after they arrive at Marrowbone. Jack is a year away from being old enough to be legally responsible for his siblings. Feeling they might be separated or sent to an orphanage, they decide to bury their mother in the garden and keep her death a secret from the world until Jack turns 21. Hiding from the world and with nowhere else to go, they try to survive without adult supervision when an ominous presence starts to haunt the old house…
